Why Do We Place So Much Importance On Jewelery (diamonds, Gold Rubies Etc)..?

when they don’t actually benefit us. Yes they may make us look more desirable to other people or give us a higher status but what does it do that is beneficial to us as it can’t get me from a to b nor can it boil water for my tea or make me toast.
Do you think were all (especially women) fed (not sure if i’ve spelt it wrong) a lie on the value of jewelery just so that we spend 1000′s of pounds/dollars just to obtain it (which the current value of that particular jewelery goes down my half the minute you walk out of the store you’ve just bought it from)..

The reason that precious stones & metals hold so much financial value is due to their rarity. Things that are rare tend to carry a higher price tag. I agree with you completely–there’s not really a “use” for these items. I think the original appeal is that wealthy kings & queens who ALREADY had everything they could ever ask for…could additionally afford these luxurious tokens. So, it was enviable that the rich had these….which made the poor want them more since they become status symbols. Make sense?

No I do not think that were all fed a lie on the value of jewlelry. I know I’m not. Please don’t say especially woman based on a quote from a dang song either. Plus tons of rappers wear chains with diamonds to show off how wealthy they are. Most women only care about diamonds when it comes to their wedding ring. It all comes down to this, if you can afford it then buy it. People spend money on things more rediculous than diamonds.

I personally don’t care for jewelry. I seriously would prefer not to get a wedding ring when getting married. I just don’t care for them at ALL.
They just look all shiny and sure they’re pretty..but I don’t care for it that much. I think some people place so much importance on it because it’s expensive…you can show off your wealth to your friends and other people with it.

Well, you could always just buy your future wife’s ring out of the 25 cent machine at Wal-Mart. :/ I’m sure she’d like that…
EDIT: You’d be surprised at how many wives would choose their spouse to buy them a ring over a car. I mean, it DOES symbolize the whole marriage itself. And who knows? If you get it out of the machine, maybe you can convince her it’s real! Ya’ know.. until it rusts out after a couple of days…

I really was just talking about that yesterday. I said why is a diamond or any other precious gem so much better than any other rock?
There is no real reason its just the power and thought behind it that we give it that make its desirable.

    we are superficial creatures
we place importance and value to things which are attractive sadly (this applies to all people ,animals and things)
    humans arent that smart

Magpie sees the shiny it likes, takes it back to the nest.
I take care of my man and dote on him, still married him even though my ring only cost probably $100. Doesn’t matter to all women. Maybe he’ll buy me a more expensive one someday for an anniversary but if not, ok. Not everyone is obsessed with jewels, gold and showing off. I do get annoyed when people are ostentatious, like that million dollar ring Hillary Duff has been sporting. Or wearing things with designer logos all over them, often looks tacky and screams “Look at me! I’m a freakin billboard for this company!” Ugh… some people. Yuck.

I think its the silliest thing there is! The only reason I’d want jewlery was to recycle it for some money for useful items. I don’t see the difference between a diamond ring or a plastic one from a toy store as long as it’s shiny and sparkly. Expensive cars are a waste too. More attractive to the theives and more money wasted if it gets damaged. I’m a woman, but I guess not woman enough to get attracted to that kind of waste of money when there are just as good things for half price and a whole lot more fun and survival things to do with the money left over.
