Sri Lanka War Crime Tribunal In Ireland ?

The Defence Secretary has decided to appoint Major General Prasanna Silva, who was the war time Commanding Officer for Mullaitivu, to a position at the Sri Lankan High Commission in the UK, sources from the Defence Ministry say.
This appointment is to be made under the programme to appoint senior forces personnel to Sri Lankan missions in countries that have been identified to be part of the LTTE’s international wing and where there is a presence of the Tamil Diaspora.
The news comes in the wake of a report by Sri Lanka Ministry of Defence recently that it has taken fresh moves to break LTTE ‘backbone’ abroad and its intelligence agencies are optimistic of cooperation by the concerned governments.
It was also reported that the Sri Lankan authorities have sought information from intelligence agencies abroad on Transnational Government on Tamil Eelam, Global Tamil Forum and the supporters of Nediyavan. Authorities are also investigating into millions of LTTE funds invested into various business ventures abroad.
Already the acceptance of a Military high officer with alleged involvement in war crimes in Sri Lanka as a deputy high commissioner for Germany has created much anguish among Tamils in Germany.
Tamil Diaspora organizations are to submit an application to the European Court of Human Rights charging the German government for violating EU Rights conventions by accepting a Sri Lankan military commander, Major General Jagath Dias, an accused in the war crimes, as Sri Lanka’s diplomat to Germany.
Maj. Gen. Jagath Dias was commanding three divisions of the army and one task force that were directly engaged in the war, which caused the death of nearly 40, 000 civilians.
The Diaspora organizations charged that Germany by accepting Jagath Dias as Sri Lanka’s ambassador has violated the human rights-based morality of the European society and has caused psychological torture to Europe’s conflict-affected Tamil population.
One Human Rights organization in Bremen alleged that significant changes have been noticed in the attitude of the German government after it decided to receive Jagath Dias as Deputy Ambassador.
After Dias’s appointment the German authorities arrested six Tamils in Germany.
Also Sri Lankan Police in May arrested a Tamil women based in Germany on her arrival in Colombo. The Ministry of Defence charged that she played a key role in the anti-Sri Lanka demonstrations held in the Germany during the final stages of the war in Vanni.
Another Sri Lankan military top brass Donald Perera, who served as the Chief of Defence Staff during the war, has been received by Israel as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador and recently ran in to controversy for a statement he made supporting Israel’s war on Palestine.
International rights organizations have called for war-crimes investigations into Sri Lanka’s conduct of war.
The attitude of the western governments that promote themselves as the guardians of human rights, accepting the military officials who were directly commanding the military operation in Vanni that resulted in nearly 40,000 civilian deaths shock the Tamil Diaspora. The governments thereby giving tacit approval to Sri Lanka’s war crimes, they say. (TNN)
