I have to make the decision to get my jaw fixed, i have a slight underbite. The dentist wants to pull my upper jaw forward. This requires him to break the upper jaw and dragging it forward, and splitting it in half to be able to widen it enough to fit my lower jaw… is anyone familiar with this procedure? perhaps link or help me find more information on how its done? how much will it affect my outlook?

Ok, the procedure you’re talking about is usually done by an Oral FacialMaxillary surgeon ( a dentist who specilizes in this sort of thing). Look up maxillotomy or FacialMaxillary Surgeryon the internet.
The procedure involves the maxilla ( upper jaw) being seperated in two places, usually one cut through the bone on the right side, and one cut through the bone on the left side. They then put a small plate and screws in those areas, seperating the jaw even further, and moving the maxilla into alignment.. This eliminates the underbite by bringing your jaws into alignment. Your jaws are usually then wired shut to each other, to give the bone time to heal.( you get a set of braces ) Your jaws stay wired and rubberbanded shut for about 6-8 weeks, and you go on a pureed or liquid diet for that time.
The pluses to this surgery are these 1) the elimination of the underbite @) less longterm damage to your teeth, than if left untreated 3) the shape of your face will change, slightly, to reflect the repair, both front on view, and side view, producing a more symmetrical look front on, and an even side view- your jaw will then line up with your forehead, to a much better degree.
