I recently installed new ram, 3 bars. I havw about 750mb of ram but my computer still load rather slow. Its a Windows XP. If I go to Google it load it rather quickly, but if I go to a forum it gets slow and when I go to Youtube it load the audio perfectly but my video plays really slow. I would say about 1 frame per 5seconds.
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002

Intel Pentium II processor

thanks.

This would be your problem. Your CPU is like the engine of your computer. The faster the CPU, the faster it can go. Whereas RAM…er…that’s a hard analogy there. But going with the car analogy, RAM is like the fuel tank. The more ram you have, the less pit stops your CPU has to do (in this case loading stuff off the hard drive/using the hard disk to provide virtual memory). A memory upgrade was a good idea. For normal websurfing the computer is probably fine. But flash is really horrible. For instance my computer has 4 cores at 2700 mhz, making it more than 24 times more powerful than your computer. And flash can use 30-50% of my processor when watching a youtube video. As for forums and that kinda stuff, sounds like the layout and design of the page is just choking your processor.
I would suggest trying google chrome as your browser. Chrome was designed to render pages quickly. For me it doesn’t matter if a webpage takes 1/5th of a second for firefox to render a page vs 1/20th of a second on chrome, as both are fast for me. But for you it should make a noticable difference. Also, with google chrome’s HTML5 support, you can opt not to use flash on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/html5 Flash is horribly programmed and not that well optimized. With HTML5 it removes the middle man (flash) from decoding the video and can significantly reduce CPU usage.
If all else fails, time to start eyeing an upgrade. No real need to buy a whole computer. Just get a cheap motherboard + dual core CPU + ram for the motherboard, everything else you currently have you should be able to use.
Cheap Motherboard $39:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
Dual core CPU $57:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
1GB DDR2 memory $19:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…
It would set you back about $117, and take a good part of a day to swap everything out and re-install windows. But the end result would be a computer that is more than 12x faster than what you have right now.
Most computers actually run slow because of a hidden part of your system, which is constantly being used by Windows. This part of your PC is called the “registry” and is the central database for Windows, which stores everything from your latest emails to your desktop wallpaper. It’s one of the most important parts of Windows and can easily make your PC run slow. The more corrupt registry files your computer has, the more it struggles to read them. The files which makes it run slower and slower. To fix this, you simply need to use a registry cleaner http://absolutely-clean-up-pc-errors.com . These are small software tools which actually work by scanning through the registry and fixing any bad files that are in there. This then allows Windows to read as many files as it wants, when it wants to.
Folks, more than likely the mainboard has three DIMM slots at 256MB max per.
Hence, the OP is maxed on RAM.
OP: Your system is older but I’ll try to help.
What video card do you have installed?
Have you checked for the latest drivers for it and then rest of the system?
Also, open devise manager and check that all hardware has drivers installed (no yellow exclamation marks).
Is your version of Flash updated to the most current version?
How many processes do you have running in Task Manager? 35-50 is good.
How much free memory is Task Manager showing?
If none, the system must use part of your hard drive for swap (extended RAM, virtually).
Then a speedier hard drive would help tremendously.
Post back and let us know.
Your system is pretty old but should be able to play most youtube content without much stutter.
RAM has almost nothing to do with internet connection speed; you’ll need to upgrade your internet connection. However, 750 MB is not nearly optimal for Windows XP; I’d suggest at least 1 GB, if not 2, but you won’t see much improvement since you’re still running a Pentium 2 CPU (about 15 years old).
Just go to Craigslist and for about $50+ you can get a “fast enough” Pentium 4 desktop PC.
lol, who uses Pentium 2? I haven’t used older than Pentium 4 and I’m only 18 1/2! I currently have a Core i5!
Your components are very outdated which is why you are having problems. Look into upgrading into at least a Pentium 4, and if you can the i Core series from Intel.
its your cpu that is slowing you down, no matter how much ram you add if you cpu can’t processes the info you will still be slow
That is still not an adequate amount of RAM. On my old computer (windows XP home edition) I upgraded it to have 3 GB of RAM and it was much faster.
MAN! Your PC is a living artifact :p just send it to a museum and get a new one…
Pentuim 2 !! That’s really old, and won’t do…
