I used to play World of Warcraft, and quit before the Wrath of the Lich King expansion came out, so more or less 3 years ago. Upon returning today, I have noticed a new account system that uses “battlenet” which was not in use before. Is it possible for me to retrieve my frozen character/ account or was there a limited window of time for me to transfer the account to the new system?

Its possible, all you have to do is merge your account with a battlenet account. You can do that at the battlenet site. Of course you also will have to pay for more subscription time. Try calling Blizzard and asking them to walk you through it if you cant figure the process out just by going to the website.
Well the rule was that all accounts were going to get fused with Battle.net
Idk if you can retrieve it. Call Blizzard and ask them.
