So i live in CA, and I work in an office. Today I wore dress pants, a solid black t-back and a cardigan. When I was on my lunch break I took off my cardigan, drove to Starbucks then went to the break room. While I was on break, I ran into the HR lady, and I knew I should put my cardigan on for work, but since I was off the clock, i figured I would be fine. I went back to work, and at the end of the day my supervisor talked to me saying HR emailed him about my inappropriate dress. Saying I needed to cover tattoos (which a lot of people have at work and are showing almost every day). I told him i was on lunch and he said he wasn’t sure, since I was on my own time. I’m thinking this has to be wrong, right? I know i’m representing the company blahblah…but legally speaking, am I doing something wrong? I’m thinking I’m just getting picked on for being new (2 weeks), but i could be totally wrong and wanted a second opinion…

Being off the clock isnt enough. You also have to be off the property in order to not break dress code. Also you can be punished for breaking dress code if you wear a company brand uniform in a way which reflects badly on the company, even if you are off the clock and off the property.
You are correct that you can dress any way you want while you are away from the company grounds, but while on the company grounds even though you are on your own time. You are representing the company so therefore must dress according to their standards.
If you are on company grounds, they can enforce the dress code. Most places would let it lie if you are out of sight of customers but my question is if any customers could possibly see you as you are leaving or arriving back from Starbucks. z
You knew you were wrong.
You were unwise and immature to go to the HR (!!!!!) out of dress code.
You should be in dress code the entire time you’re on the property.
Time to grow up.
I’m NAKED right now, and my pelotas are swinging in the wind.
I’m Not at work, so DON’T LOOK, or at least send me a Thank YOu card.
