“atheism Is A Religion,” Says A Christian—what Do All Of You Think?

By WinPie Posted in: word

Someone replied to one of my questions and insisted that atheism is a religion. I sent him a private message of the definition of the word atheism, because he obviously doesn’t know what atheism is.
Here’s what this idiot wrote back: “You use a dictionary like it is your holy book. I encourage you to compare the differing definitions in different dictionaries for this word. You will find no uniformity.”
Oh, so because different dictionaries use different types of sentence structure to make the same point, the definition of atheism must be a religion. Real smooth logic.
The mumbling idiot then rambled on and said that I “only see what [my] master wants me to see.” He implied that I, an atheist who doesn’t believe in any super natural entities, followed Satan, who I was supposedly allowing to prevent me from agreeing with the said idiot.
Wow, I’ll be this individual has a doctorate in psycho analysis, huh?
He then made two irrelevant, non sequitur points that have no connection to anything about the subject we were discussing.
Anyhow, I thought other atheists on this forum would get a kick out of this Christian.
Anyway, what do all of you think? Is atheism a religion?

Everyone who believes in God follows God. Everyone who does not believe in God follows the Devil. Atheism is therefore a religion of Satan.

  2. Anonymous Says

You can’t prove that God exists, but likewise, you can’t prove that he doesn’t exist. Therefore, atheism isn’t following any kind of science. It is just a matter of faith that no God exists. Atheism and religion both involve faith in something that no one will ever know is true, but religion is defined as belief in a higher power. The two are similar, but atheism is not a religion.

  3. Desert Wisdom Says

Atheism requires faith, its not organized like religion, but there are atheist books, churches, camps, social gatherings, popular icons, authors, etc.
It has qualties of a religion in as much as faith and organizarion go.

  4. Citoldus Says

You believe what you believe vehemently, and defend it and give the same reasons religiously, so in a sense your religion would be the belief that there is no God or no gods. Religiously speaking of course.

  5. John Says

Upon what basis is “religion” defined? We will need to establish consensus on this before we proceed further on this question.

  6. Graham Says

I lol’d at “You use a dictionary like it is your holy book.”
IT’S FUNNY BECAUSE IT’S ACTUALLY A GOOD IDEA.

  7. terafloo Says

Atheism is a religion in the same way that its a religion to NOT believe that my car is run by little elves.

  8. Cryst Says

Atheism is as much of a religion as theism is.

  9. Mfh H Says

No atheism is not a religion. Is is a response to a claim that a god or gods exist.
Christians can be misinformed about this or willfully blind or some just plain lie .

  10. James Says

Yep, he’s an idiot. You made the right call. Of course, I suppose he’d also call bald a hair color? Or not collecting stamps a hobby?

  11. ART’d Says

Atheism is not a religion. They are the “anti-CHRIST” because they are against CHRIST and GOD.

  12. Michael K Says

Terrible analogy. It would be akin to calling non-stamp collecting as a hobby.

  13. Jerad Says

    Atheism is a philosophy.

  14. Sjnoring Vjerilood Says

    Is aunicornism a religion?

  15. Mr. Knowitall Says

how can a ‘disbelief of religion’ be a religion?
    that person is an idiot

  16. Kyle : The Religion Chrusher !!! Says

Christians are dumb if you are smart you know Atheism is not a religion

  17. pab Says

I think it’s funny when they try to insult us by lowering us to their level.
I mean really…isn’t insulting us by comparing us to yourself more of an insult to you?

  18. shasalor Says

    Yup. The guy’s an idiot.

  19. deceptic Says

Of course it isn’t and that Christian is an idiot.

He is an ACE in a deck of DUMBA$$ES

  22. Dani Says

    More proof Christians are stupid

  23. kayennes Says

    Nope.
Y’all don’t have rituals and rites worshipping
    a deity.
However, some may be ‘cultish’ in their intense
hammering away at their points, just like certain
    ‘sects’ of ‘religious Christians’ are.
It’s pretty uncomfortable and doesn’t win any
hearts on either side, in my opinion….
What would life be like if we would, for one whole
60 second period every day, just sit in complete
peace with all the differing beliefs, proofs, opinions,
counter-proofs and arguments, and just for that
sixty seconds once a day, just sit in NON judgment,
empty the mind and BE PEACE BREATHING,
just for one minute a day. If everyone did this,
the world would be an entirely different place.
Just my little one grain of sand in the beach
    of humanity’s opinion..
    thanks for the Q :)

Here’s what I say to folks like that when they compare atheism to a religion:
I like when people such as you compare atheism to a religion. It’s as if you’re saying, “You atheists think you’re so rational, but really your beliefs are just baseless as our- wait! that’s not what I meant. I was trying to say that atheism has just as little evidence as Christia- no that’s not coming out right…”
Atheism can, indeed, be a tenet of some religions. But it can no more be a religion on its own than theism (the belief in a God or Gods) can be a single religion. Many people who believe in God(s) don’t belong to any religion. Many people who disbelieve in God(s) belong to one religion or another (like Taoism or pantheism). But unless you’re prepared to admit that you belong to the exact same religion as Muslims and Hindus, both atheism and theism are terms reserved for a single tenet, belief or disbelief in deities.

  25. Richard S Says

Christians are very conservative and efficient. They have the ability to awe and astound other Christians in just about any aspect as long as it’s backed up by this magical little black book of theirs. Furthermore, if they see another fellow Christian not complying, they can threaten them with hell (this works 100%). We others, should all learn from them and perhaps one day, we may go back to a much fulfilling and simpler life with the big guy up the sky dictating us and telling us whats wrong or right even though it can be violent, disturbing, illogical and sometimes, stupid. Wouldn’t that be nice?

  26. Paul Says

To be fair to both sides, Atheism in and of itself isn’t a religion by any definition of religion that I have come accross however some atheists can be religious. Try telling a Buddhist that he isn’t religious, yet a Buddhist is most definitely an atheist. One doesn’t have to believe in a deity to be religious. For those who don’t know about Buddhism, Buddhists on the whole don’t believe in any external creator god thus making them an atheistic religion.
Conversely there are some theistic philosophies such as deism that would strongly object to being called religious (some deists also object to being called theistic but their belief in some kind of god puts them under the broadest definition of theism which is why it is listed on some lists of philosophies as a sub-set of theism to the annoyance of those deists). That being said, not all deists object to being called religious, so long as they can define religious in Einstein’s words:
My feeling is religious insofar as I am imbued with tile consciousness of the insufficiency of the human mind to understand more deeply the harmony of the Universe which we try to formulate as “laws of nature.” Albert Einstein — Letter to Beatrice Frohlich, December 17, 1952; Einstein Archive 59-797
Also, I’d be curious to see what you make of this definition of religion.
“To devote your life to the good of all and to the happiness of all is religion. Whatever you do for your own sake is not religion”
    Swami Vivekananda
You see not every definition of religion has to involve some kind of deity.
I’m not telling you that atheism is a religion, it most certainly is not but I hope that you will see that there are many definitions of religion not just the dictioinary’s.

  27. T J Says

religion: a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects:
all it is is a set of beliefs that one or more people believe in. does not necessarily need to believe in a god or higher power. If athiesm causes ppl to behave or think a certain way, then it is religion. just as believing in a god or higher power causes ppl to behave or think a certain way, so does atheism.
I hope this makes sense. I’m trying to be logical and intellectual, I am a Christian who does use his brain and not emotions

  28. Daddy Dennis Says

Thanks for posting this, Hatred. I loved the replies to it. Some really good ones!
I know now why you chose to be Atheist. You fear being called stupid. This is why you use it like a crutch to insult me. It hurts you when people use it on you.
The “non sequitur” points I made are called “paradoxes”. Places in reality that a logical person can see where their logic stops working. You can’t see because you are a slave to sin and blinded by fear.
Once again, THANKS! I love you!
    And let me repeat…
ALL, not some, ALL social networking websites on the planet list Atheism under a choice for religion on the same list as none. Why? Because they will lose money if they lie. People will be offended.
This is how you can tell which merchant is using truth. If they have no money to lose for lying (like dictionary publishers), they lie. If they lose money for lying (like Myspace and Facebook etc.) they don’t lie. Get it?

  29. Renee Says

well to an answer your question first, obviously not.
though i cant really blame the guy. the thing is there are some people who are actually very psychologically weak and the idea of a god or religion is such a safety net that their minds will go to great lengths to try and make it logical… or at least sound logical to them.
in the end, there is no changing this persons mind, no matter what you say their narrow mind will make an excuse for what you said.. reminds me of that quote about debating creationists is like playing chess with pigeons; they **** on the board, knock over the pieces and then fly back to their flock to claim victory.

  30. No Chance Without Jesus Says

Its a belief in the completely unprovable “There is no God” it qualifies

  31. EzaL Says

Atheism is a waste of time like most of satans belongings.
