I need to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7 in order to play Battlefield 3 because it’s DX10 and XP is only able to provide DX9.0c.
Is there an upgrade package to buy , or if I get the full version, can I transfer my files on XP ?

Learn all you can about Windows Easy Transfer FIRST.
Then, use it to transfer your files to your XHD.
Do NOT just ‘Drag and Drop’ them to the XHD.
You can buy a memory stick (2-128gb), then install windows 7. however, most computers running windows xp that are converted over to 7 are very bad in performance. They are slower and aren’t as good as xp ( i have a pc i concerted to 7, and it is slower than a snail. ran good before.
When installing the upgrade it gives you the option to upgrade your current OS or to do a clean install, the upgrade is usually a clean install of the OS only, all other files are left untouched, but there is no grantee of them still being usable, the clean install formats the computer completely.
You can transfer your files, but the best way to go to Windows 7 from XP is to do a clean install. Just back up your files, install Windows 7 fresh, and then copy your files back over.
No, only if its from vista to 7. Will not apply from xp to 7.
