so i have been thinking about installing an open source OS because Vista is shitty and it might make me computer go faster
first Q is, do you recommend a particular one and some reasons?
and is it possible to keep my microsoft suite (word, powerpoint etc) otherwise do you know a good replacement?
thanks in advanced

Ubuntu is definitely the most user friendly and it has the largest following. My personal favorite (and semi-unofficial) branch of Ubuntu is Ultimate Edition. It comes with Open Office, which is a pretty good replacement for M$…
If your looking for more alternatives this website has a bunch:http://www.linuxalt.com/
You can find most all of these in the Ubuntu Software Center from the main menu.
For info and the download of Ultimate Edition see here:http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Op…
If you want to get a feel for other distros, check out this never ending update of Linux Distros here:http://distrowatch.com/
You’ll find visually, most all of them depend on Gnome or KDE. It’s all user preference and it can be changed regardless of your distro.
I have use Ubuntu and it is awesome. It is the most user friend version of Linux and there are good replacements for Microsoft software. I recommend trying it first to see if you like it though. You can get a live cd by downloading Ubuntu from the site and then burn it to a disc and then put it in the optical drive reboot and it should boot from the disc and try it. You can also dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu or use a virtual machine like virtual box which is free. Virtual box lets you run other OSs in a program and it work normally. I like Linux and most of the distributors and Ubuntu is a good one to use if you have never use Linux before.
I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning (mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below)http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi
You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.
mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.
Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.
Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint
You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation
Linux Mint 9 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive
LUg.
Linux Ubuntu has replacements for Microsoft products.
You don’t even have to get rid of Windows. You can configure your system to be a double-boot system by installing Linux Ubuntu in a separate partition in your hard drive.
I too despise Vista, and I used it for some months. I now use Windows 7 and love it.
I think these people know their stuff but I would also have a look at Windows 7 as it is awesome.
Vista is kind of bad, if you want the best try Windows 7 ultimate.
