I thought there was no oil in the car so I put the whole 51/2 qts in, and now its smoking (white). what do I do? I dont want to drive the car and get a ticket, but will start a new job soon…

Drain the oil out and refill it to correct amount. Restart the engine and it will smoke for a little bit as the oil burns out, then clear up and should run fine. Possible you could have done some damage to the engine but very unlikely. The plugs may get/be oil covered and foul out and need to be replaced, but again not likely.
